Extensive Android Wear notification support has been added to the Pebble smartwatch. The development team behind the device say that the upgrade enables access to the full range of notification actions supported by Android Wear.
Adding Android Wear notification support is simple enough for Pebble owners, who just need to update their smartwatch to the latest firmware, and download the most recent edition of the Pebble Android app from Google Play.
In announcing support for Android Wear notifications, the Pebble team made a point of praising the open nature of the platform, which they credited with allowing them to offer such extensive integration.
“Integrating Pebble with Android Wear is thanks to the open approach Google built into Android’s notification system,” a Pebble employee said in a blog post. “Openness is a value Pebble shares and appreciates.
“We hope more mobile operating systems follow suit so all Pebblers – no matter their smartphone choice – can take advantage of all the delightful features we introduce now, and in the future.”
As manufacturers such as ASUS and LG look at alternatives to Android Wear for their own smartwatches, it is likely that they will still rely on the open nature of Google’s wearable operating system in order to ensure compatibility with other devices.
In addition to full support for Android Wear notifications, there is also another feature that is specific to Pebble. Pebbler-defined replies allow five custom templates to be set up, meaning that responding to notifications is made that little bit quicker.
