The European Parliament has continued to make progress on the abolition of roaming charges, which will come into effect on 15 June, 2017. An agreement has now been reached between the European Parliament and European Council over wholesale price caps.
The deal to set wholesale price caps has been seen as an important milestone in enabling mobile networks to eliminate roaming fees.
Ending roaming charges will mean that customers from the European Union will be billed for data usage and voice calls at the same rate as their domestic terms. This will apply no matter which member state they are located in.
There will be benefits in terms of both cost savings and simplicity. Roaming charges have traditionally been set very high, and have also varied from country-to-country.
