Google announces Android emoji overhaul

All current Android emojis are to be retired, with a new set of icons to be introduced in their place. News has come following an announcement at the Android I/O developer conference, with confirmation that design features first introduced in 2013 will now be dropped.

The changes are set to be introduced with Android 8.0 O, and will mean that emojis will take on a very different look in the forthcoming operating system.

Both the blob character and teardrop shape, which have become very familiar to Android users, will no longer feature.

As part of the changes, Google will adopt support for Emoji 5.0, meaning recognition for the likes of the ‘vomit face’ and dinosaurs.
