In a major product announcement at the Google I/O developer conference, Google Home has been unveiled. The device is connected speaker, which contains a series of always-on microphones, allowing it to act as a personal assistant.
In addition to its functionality as a speaker, Google Home is able to take care of a variety of tasks, such as answering questions and controlling other gadgets.
An factor that was clear from the announcement is that Google Home is very much still under development. There is currently no release date for the device, although it will be made available at some point during 2016.
The obvious reason for the new device being announced at Google I/O is to attract developer support. However, it is also likely that Google wanted to make it clear that it intends to compete against the Amazon Echo – a similar product that has been produced by the internet-retail giant.
