A new version of Google Play Services has been released for all devices running anything from Android 2.3 Gingerbread to Android 4.4 KitKat. There is no need for users to take any action, as the update will automatically be downloaded and installed.
Given the recent hype about Android Wear, it is no surprise to see improved support for wearables in Google Play Services 5.0.
The update includes the addition of the Wearable Data Layer API, which allows smartphones and tablets to communicate with wearable apps.
Another feature of Google Play Services 5.0 that should be warmly welcomed by developers centres around security. The Security API allows for installation of a dynamic security provider, which Google Play Services can manage and maintain with security fixes.
In addition to the wearable and security features provided by Google Play Services 5.0, there are also API enhancements for analytics, app indexing, Google Drive, Play Games and Google Wallet.
