The Google Home speaker will launch in the United Kingdom, some eight months after it was first released in the United States. It will go on sale in June, although local pricing and sales channels have yet to be confirmed.
Although some Google hardware products never make it beyond the US, it is not a surprise that Google Home is receiving an international release.
Google Home is an important outlet for the search engine giant’s artificial intelligence technology. The speaker acts as a personal assistant, interacts with various smart home products and interfaces with a number of services.
In the AI race Amazon is already ahead, having launched its Alexa speaker in the US, the UK and Germany.
It was always likely that Google would seek to take on Amazon internationally, rather than potentially allow its rival to dominate AI markets around the globe.
