Huawei’s impressive growth is continuing, with the Chinese company drawing level for the number two spot when it comes to global smartphone market share. Rapid growth in Europe, the Middle East and Africa means that Huawei is now putting pressure on Apple, with little to separate the two companies in terms of global smartphone shipments.
The latest data is from market research company Canalys, who report Huawei performing particularly strongly in Europe, with sales of 26 million units.
Huawei’s sales numbers are all the more impressive when taking into account that the smartphone market as a whole has been flat-lining.
The company’s growth in 2016 has been driven by smartphones that have generally been regarded to be high quality, premium products.
The Huawei P9 was launched in April this year and was followed recently by the Huawei Mate 9. Both devices offer a premium metal build and feature Leica-branded cameras.
Huawei has also invested substantially on marketing, spending £10 million on promoting the Huawei P9 in the UK alone.
