New Nearby service for Android

Google is reportedly working on a new service that will enable Android devices to be more responsive to their location. The new feature, known as Nearby, will present information that is personalised to wherever you happen to be in the world.

Nearby will work with existing hardware by making use of various sensors on smartphones and tablets. The Nearby onboarding screen explains that Google can activate a device’s wi-fi, bluetooth, microphone and ‘similar features’.

It is not difficult to imagine the wide range of circumstances in which a service like Nearby could be used. As well as providing organisational information such as location-specific reminders, Nearby could also be used for commercial purposes, highlight offers when close to advertisers’ shops.
