If the drama of the holiday season becomes too much, then Atari has delivered some retro escapism just-in-time. As a nice little surprise, the company has dropped RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic on the Play Store.
Although there is already a mobile edition of the game available, the new release is a port of the original PC titles, and includes features from both RollerCoaster Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2.
Unlike the mobile version, RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic is largely free of the often-despised in-app purchases. But, naturally enough, this comes at a cost, with the game being priced at €6.99/£5.99/$5.99.
As far as the lack of in-app purchases is concerned, there is one exception – expansion packs are available to buy for the Android edition of the game. Although in this respect, the title is arguably little different from its PC forerunner.
In contrast to RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile, the new port has no in-app purchases in the form of ‘tickets’ or ‘coins’.
The original RollerCoaster Tycoon was released back in 1999 for PC and has become something of a cult classic on PC.
Porting games from PC to mobile, while still retaining everything that made the original great, is always challenging.
In the case of RollerCoaster Tycoon, developers have wrestled with the task of converting an interface that was originally designed to be used with a mouse, over to touch input. And from what Android Wafer can tell so far, they seem to have done a good job.
