For some time Samsung has been rumoured to be working on mobile devices based around flexible displays. Yet despite the speculation, there are few hard facts available about the company’s plans for foldable smartphones and tablets.
The lack of solid information should not be a surprise, however, given that the technology is still in its relatively early stages of development.
But providing a clear – yet unsurprising – indication that Samsung is investing in research and development of flexible displays, the South Korean company has been granted a patent relating to the technology.
Samsung’s patent has been issued by the US Patent Office, and is based on flexible OLED displays.
Patent documents indicate that Samsung’s designs could be used for both foldable smartphones, as well as allowing for shatter-proof screens on handsets.
