Powerful Android smartphones sold at affordable prices was one of the stories of 2014, as far as China’s mobile market was concerned. With the new year now upon us, French company ARCHOS is hoping to spread this low-cost phenomenon with the introduction of the ARCHOS 50 Diamond.
It seems that there will not be any surprises left when the ARCHOS 50 Diamond goes on display at the CES 2015 trade show next week, as the company has revealed a comprehensive set of images and specs ahead of the event.
Although ARCHOS has given up the opportunity to shock CES attendees, the tactic of a full-reveal ahead of the trade show will probably prove to be a savvy move. Normally, a company like ARCHOS would struggle to attract attention, given that it is up against product launches from international household names such as LG, Samsung and Sony.
The ARCHOS 50 Diamond will feature a 5-inch full HD IPS display and 4G LTE compatibility. It will be powered by a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, with four cores running at 1.7 GHz and the remaining four at 1.0 GHz.
Other specs of the ARCHOS 50 Diamond include 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a microSD expansion slot (with support for cards up to 128GB capacity) and Android 4.4.4 KitKat.
As far as the camera is concerned, the ARCHOS 50 Diamond has a 16 megapixel rear-facing shooter with a backside-illuminated sensor (BSI). The main camera offers autofocus, has an LED flash and supports 1080p video recording.
There is also an 8 megapixel front-facing camera for taking those selfies and chatting away on Skype.
Although the specs of the ARCHOS 50 Diamond are marginally below those likely to be seen on 2015 Android smartphones from companies such as Samsung and LG, it is still an exceptionally well-equipped device.
ARCHOS is keen to promote the striking yellow and black edition of the new handset, using the tagline ‘Shine brighter’. This is a refreshing change from the standard white alternative that most manufacturers offer, although some will inevitably be pleased that pictures of a more traditional all-black version have also been released.
ARCHOS 50 Diamond price
The price is an aspect of this new Android smartphone that ARCHOS are eager to draw attention to. Loïc Poirier, General Director of ARCHOS, emphasised value for money, when launching the device.
“In 2014, consumers don’t have access to high performance handsets from traditional smartphone vendors below £500,” said Poirier. “With the ARCHOS 50 Diamond, we are pushing forward the same advanced technology but we make it accessible to all consumers.”
ARCHOS has provided information about the cost of its new smartphone for a number of key European markets. The price of the ARCHOS 50 Diamond in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain and Italy breaks down as follows:
- France – under €200
- UK – under £200
