Owners of the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and Pixel C have been left frustrated by the news that only Google’s 2016 Pixel phones will officially receive the full version of Android 7.1 Nougat straight away. Yet a couple of affordable handsets from China could soon be updated to the latest edition of Google’s mobile operating system.
The devices in question are the Vernee Thor and Jiayu S3 Plus. While they are not the only smartphones with Android Nougat support via third-party ROMs, they stand out due to their affordability.
Enthusiasts have produced unofficial Android Nougat ROMs for a whole host of devices from the likes of Samsung, Sony and LG. But both that Vernee Thor and Jiayu S3 Plus are relatively obscure handsets, the kind of which do not typically attract much support amongst the modding community.
On XDA-Developers’ list of popular devices with Android Nougat ROMs, the Vernee Thor, Jiayu S3 and Jiayu S3 Plus are all noteworthy due to their affordability and relative obscurity.
The Vernee Thor and Jiayu S3 Plus both run the MediaTek MT6753 quad-core system-on-chip, while the Jiayu S3 is powered by the MediaTek MT6752.
Android 7.0 Nougat ROMs have been developed for all three by MediaTek Android Developers. The group is linked to a Germany-based company which imports Vernee and Jiayu products, amongst other brands.
Although the Android 7.1 Nougat updates for the Vernee Thor and Jiayu S3 will come in the form of unofficial ROMs (assuming they are made available publicly), the previous Android 7.0 Nougat release from MAD was stable and generally performed well.
