Given the widespread concerns that exist around the world about surveillance, the growing popularity of messaging apps that are designed to protect users’ privacy is no surprise. Now Wire, which is backed by Skype co-founder Janus Friis, has added encrypted video messaging to the mix.
Last month Telegram, a rival to Wire, revealed impressive growth figures, with the service having reached 100 million active users.
A fact that will help Wire to grow is that it is backed by the co-founder of Skype and staffed by former engineers from the video calling company. This alone will ensure Wire receives plenty of press coverage, and the previous experience at Skype means that the insurgent has a healthy dose of industry knowledge to tap into.
