Android has opened up an astonishing lead in India, having now reached a smartphone market share of 97.1 percent in the country. Google’s mobile operating system was already a strong performer in India, but the latest figures from research company Strategy Analytics show that it has been continuing to record impressive growth.
There was a total of 29.8 million Android smartphones sold in the second quarter of 2016 in India, representing a 28% increase over the same period last year.
The Indian smartphone market as a whole has suffered a slowdown, with yearly growth figures declining from 44% in the second quarter of 2015, to 19% 12 months later. Android therefore outperformed the market as a whole, after iOS and other platforms saw their share of sales fall.
Although iOS remains in second place having recorded sales of 0.8 million, this was a substantial year-on-year fall of 33%.
