It will soon be possible to share location data from the Google Maps mobile apps. The feature is designed to make organising events and meet-ups easy, by sharing data between selected contacts.
When choosing to share their whereabouts, users will be able to select which Google contacts are sent the information.
It will also be possible to specify exactly how long location data remains available for.
In addition to sharing a specific location, the new feature will also allow trips to be shared. Selected contacts will be able to monitor a trip in real-time, as well as view an estimated arrival time.
In a blog post explaining how location sharing will be deployed, Daniel Resnick, Engineering Manager for Google Maps, said that he expects it will prove particularly useful during delays.
“Next time you’re on your way or running late, you can share your real-time location and trip progress from navigation as well,” Resnick explained.
Location sharing will be available from the Google Maps app on both Android and iOS. Although any contact who is provided with a location will be able to view details on the web, as well as via the app.
