Samsung has shown off a new memory card that is capable of much faster read and write speeds than microSD cards can achieve. The Universal Flash Storage cards offer a number of different storage capacities, including 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB.
With read speeds of 530 megabytes per second, Samsung’s UFS cards are actually capable of producing a similar read performance to SATA SSD hard drives. The read speeds stated are also more than five times quicker than those of typical microSD cards.
As far as write performance is concerned, the UFS cards are also impressive, with speeds of 170 MB/s – almost twice as fast as top-performing microSD cards.
Currently, though, there are no products available which offer support for UFS cards. Samsung will be hoping that manufacturers back the technology, given that the significantly faster transfer speeds would be of great benefit when it comes to high resolution content.
The announcement of the new Samsung UFS cards has generated a lot of buzz. Given the staggeringly-fast read and write speeds, it it possible they may end up being an SD card killer.
Samsung envisages UFS cards being used in a variety of products, including digital SLRs, action cameras, 3D virtual reality cameras and drones.
